This post describes some nice ideas for varying highlighting in different situations.
It would be great to switch easily in IJ...

Hello Jörg,
Thank you for contacting YouTrack community forums. I have forwarded your request to the IJ support team, they will get back to you shortly.
In the future, please use Ij community forums for IJ-related question: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us#
Thank you!
Hi! Thank you for the feedback. I've looked through the document and pointed out some statements. Feel free to create feature requests on the remainder. I've also passed the article to the UX team.
> Rainbow parenthesis
There's a plugin for that (and a request to implement in IDEs).
> Highlight different levels of nesting

> Import highlighting
Please specify the use case if you're missing something in imports highlighting. Currently, when pressing on an imported statement, the stripe marks indicate all usages in the file (near the scrollbar).
> Argument Highlighting
You can customise variables highlighting, e.g. under "Preferences | Editor | Color Scheme | Java | Variables" for Java. Other identifiers can also be customised depending on the language. Meta-issue about customising the highlighting: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEABKL-5473
As a colorblind person I want to say that it is hard to create a color scheme for all people. Shapes, bolds, underlines give me much more information than red-green hues.
