Move from hour estimation to points

In what way is it possible to move from hour estimation to points and still have a good burndown chart?

Can somebody share experience or how we should use Youtrack?

Thanks in advance

Hello Winfred,

Yes, it's possible.
For that you need to create a new custom field of integer type, choose this field as Estimation field on Projects-> your project-> 'Time tracking' tab, and choose this field in Agile settings under Estimation field.

Feel free to contact us if need an additional assistance according to this request.

Thank you.

Hi Andrey

I tested your proposal but within > Projects > my project > Time tracking I can only pick "No Estimnation field", "Estimation", "Create a new field" . I already created a field "Sotrypoints" but it's not in the list.

I removed the new field "Storypoiunts" and picked the option "Create a new field" from the time tracking select box, but in that way I can only pick period values or integer values that will transform into periods.

Am i missing something, is this something of this version? Can you help me

Andrey, is it possible to recheck if this option should really work ?

Winfred,

I assume I had to describe the solution in more details last time. Moerover, I was a little bit wrong. Sorry for that.
We have a Time Tracking option which assumes Estimation and Spent time fields of a 'period' type or 'integer', 'float' convertable to hours or days.
On Agile board, under Estimation drop-down, you can choose a every custom field of 'integer' type.
Sum it up, in your case, you may disable Time Tracking option at all. You can create an integer custom field, fill in story points there and then on Agile board (choosing this field under Estimation) show a burndown chart on that field.

Thanks Andrey, This is working as expected.

I'm still unclear how this works. Could I clarify a few things:

1) Ideally we would like the Estimation field to be am enum field called "Story Points", so that the user can pick from something like the following "Story Point" values:

    0     (i.e. No effort)
    ½
    1
    2
    3
    5
    8
    13
    20
    40
    100
    ?     (i.e. Not sure)

Assuming we would need to remove "?" as possible value (and presumably 0.5, if it has to be an integer value) is it still possible to have the Estimation field as an Enum field or does it have to be of type Period or Integer only?

2) If we want Burndown charts but not actual time tracking of hours/days do I just need to select the field I want to use as the Estimation field (e.g. "Story Points") in the Agile Board settings, or do I also still need to Enable "Time Tracking" for the project? We don't need to know how many hours/days were spent solving an issue, just how how many Story Points are completed for each sprint etc/ Thanks

I don't know if its possible to use enum, but you can test. For the second question you just need to change the estimation field. Time tracking isn't related to this.

Doesn't look possible to use enum, even with only integer values, unless I'm doing something wrong. Thanks for confirming that Time Tracking not necessary for burn down charts,

BTW is it possible to request adding an enum field as a allowable value for Agile Estimation? Preferably with floating point values, though integer-only would do. How would I make such a request? Thanks

Hello Winfred,

Thanks for your answers.

Hello Oxford_Guy,

Unfortunately, 'Estimation' field on Agile board allows fields of 'integer' and 'period' types only.
To make it possible to log estimation in story points format and display charts on Agile board, you don't need Time Tracking. You only to create a custom fields of an 'integer' type and choose it as an Estimation in Agile board settings.
You may submit your feature requests to youtrack-feedback@jetbrains.com or here. We'll be happy to discuss them. BTW, I've created a task according to your request, please leave comments and votes http://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JT-21321 .

Thank you.
