Custom workflow and custom field preventing issue modification

I have a custom workflow (attached) that prevents developers from moving an issue to a closed state if a custom author field is empty or contains the text "Not specified."
I have an issue that has valid text in the field, is in the 'won't fix' state, and the workflow is preventing me from entering 'Never' into the 'Fixed in build' field.

I realize this is an extremely customized case, but if anyone can point me in some direction as to logs or any other sort of debugging information to try to see why the workflow thinks that the field is empty, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks!

If field hasn't value, e.g. shows 'empty text' in issue, than the workflow treats this field as 'null'.

You can see debug information in logs ({user_home}/.youtrack/logs/workflow.log), use the method debug(string);.

Also you can use message(string) to see debugging info on the full screen issue.

I don't disagree that if the field is empty it would/should be treated as null.  However as the screenshot shows, the field clearly had a value which is why I am so confused by the operation of the workflow.

I temporarily detached the workflow, made my modifications and reattached the workflow.  Without making any changes to the custom field, the workflow is working again as I had intended.

I still don't have a root cause, but I was able to work around the issue so that's good enough for me.
