Yeah and do not want a modal and I do not want a new tab. Never mind, I fixed it using a uBlock Origin rule which strips out all target attributes.

This is really annoying, you should never force a user to open a link in a predefined way. On a link without target attribute you have every option to open it in the same tab, a new tab, window or ...
