How do I make a custom field required?

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to create a custom field that is a required field.  I see on the Project's Field tab that there is an option for "Can't be empty" but it is grayed out for my new custom field.  Any ideas on how I select this option?  Or any other ways for making the field required?
