is it possible to include a pipe (|) character inside of a table?

Tried a bunch of things including | but other than using the | as the alias of a link (| it's always interpreted as a table cell delimiter.  Is there a way?

Unfortunately, every | symbol is defined as a delimiter is table. What's the use case to include this inside table?

I don't know exactly - I was asked by one of our users if it was possible.  We use the | symbol in macros and likely they wanted to make a table w/ macros in it or some such.  It's not a huge deal - they will work around it.  I WAS able to include a | character in a URL in a table I think but that doesn't really help :)  Seems like there should be a way to escape any character?

Is there a solution on this? I also need an escape symbol for | in tables. This is very inconvenient.
