SMTP Error: javax.mail.MessagingException: 501 HELO requires valid address

Similar to this member's problem: http://forum.jetbrains.com/thread/YouTrack-575 I'm having a connection issue on a local copy of YouTrack.

Only when I test the address in question using Outlook, it works when selecting the "Outgoing server requires authentication" checkbox. So it's something within YouTrack.

Does YouTrack use outgoing authentication by default?

Current YouTrack settings using GoDaddy's email server:
smtpout.secureserver.net
465
SMTP+SSL
email@domain.com
password
No key
YouTrack <email@domain.com>

Still looking for help on this issue. Thanks!

Hello Chris,

Please, have a look at Godaddy's instructions. Try to use SMTP only with 80th or 25th port.

Thank you.

Hey Andrey,

Thanks for your help.

I have already gone through the entire problem with GoDaddy tech support and have determined it's something with YouTrack. Every port (25,80,3535 and SSL 465) provides the same error message.

Testing SMTP with Outlook works fine, including port 465. Is there any known bug with this or anything I can try within YouTrack?

Thanks, Chris

This continues to be a problem. GoDaddy support cannot find any issue and outgoing SMTP works in other clients.

Using YouTrack 5.2.2

Hi Chris,

Sorry for a short delay!
Could you please clarify, did you try to use SMTP protocol, instead of SMTP+ SSL ? It should work, as described in video, with SMTP with 80th and 25th ports.
Also, what do you mean:
'Testing SMTP with Outlook works fine, including port 465 ' ?

Thank you.

Hi Andrey,

Yes I've tried SMTP (25, 80, 3535) and SMTP+SSL (465). All return the same error "501 HELO requires valid address".

Also, what do you mean:
'Testing SMTP with Outlook works fine, including port 465 ' ?

Meaning I've tried Port 25, 80, 3535 and 465 (SSL) and all work correctly in Outlook. The client connects to the server (smtpout.secureserver.net) without any problem and can send outgoing emails.

Thanks, Chris

Hello Chris,

Apologies for a delay.
We still investigate the issue. It works well with other servers, we are trying to debug why do you reproduce this with GoDaddy.
BTW, as far as it's seen, the issue reproduces with many other clients. Just search for the issue header '501 HELO requires valid address' .

I'll do my best to get back to you asap.
Thank you.

Okay thanks for the update Andrey.

I realize it does happen with other systems relying on Java Mailer but it seems like GoDaddy's server is looking for authentication which YouTrack is failing to provide.
