Cannot select a custom user field as the source for Assignee in Workflow Constructor

Hello,

I am configuring an on-change rule in the YouTrack Workflow Constructor.

When an issue’s state changes to “Development” , the rule should set Assignee to the user selected in the custom field “Developer”.

However, in the “Update the Value in a Field” action, after selecting Assignee, I cannot select Developer as the source. In the user reference picker for the current issue, the “Fields” section is disabled and cannot be expanded. References such as “Created by” and “Updated by” are selectable. The unavailable field reference is hidden by the “Hide unsupported fields” filter.

I have verified that:

  • The workflow is attached to the correct project.
  • Developer is a single-value user field (user[1]).
  • Developer is available in regular condition blocks, where I can select its value.

What could cause this restriction? Is this a known limitation or a bug?

Could we implement this using “Apply a Command”? We need a solution within the visual constructor; JavaScript workflows are not an option.

Hi Vitalii!

This is a known bug in the Workflow Constructor, not an issue with your configuration. The expandable entries in the reference picker, including Fields, can't be opened, so custom fields like Developer can't be inserted as a reference. Turning off Hide unsupported fields doesn't change this, since that filter only hides entries.

The bug is tracked in JT-96824. Please feel free to vote for this issue. Your vote helps us measure how many customers encounter this problem and automatically subscribes you to updates. To do so, sign in to JetBrains YouTrack and click the thumbs-up icon.

Apply a Command won't work around it. Its command text uses the same Insert reference picker, so Developer can't be referenced there either. Right now, a JavaScript workflow is the only way to copy a user field into Assignee.
