Is there a way to create an issue by sending an email?
I have read the email integration, and it seems to scrape every email that comes in, parse it and automatically create issues. I am curious if there is a way to only create an issue if I email some youtrack address - e.g. if I email my-account-id@youtrack.jetbrains.com, with some subject line CREATE ISSUE it will create an issue.

I'm Sergey from the Youtrack team.
The best solution would be using the Mailbox integration you mentioned yourself. It lets you connect an email server from which the emails are to be fetched. In this email server, you can select a folder which the integration will fetch the emails from. So all you need to do is set up a filter in your email server that will put the required emails into this folder. Then our integration will fetch them and create issues and comments in Youtrack from this folder.

With Podio one can copy the e-mail address of a project / space to the field for the notification e-mail address e.g. in LinkedIn.
We use e-mail only for such notifications. When you (let people) create an e-mail address for each YouTrack project, you help people replace e-mail with valuable software.
I've been unable to use your default mailbox. How can I choose a project for its address? It might suffice for this application.

If you don't want to use Helpdesk projects for this purpose, you can set up a mailbox integration for each separate project.

How can one make e-mail notifications from other software developers create issues in YouTrack without creating e-mail messages?
It doesn't matter what the e-mail address is in YouTrack. Podio generates a complex e-mail address for each project randomly.
2.1 I imagine I'd go here and use a mailbox, e.g. your default mailbox.
2.2 Who's going to help me understand your default mailbox?
It displays an e-mail address: [instance]@youtrack.cloud
I've sent messages to it, but I've seen no result. That's why I've asked how one can choose a project for it.
